How Do I Get Started?
- For many, their 'dream kitchen' is something they've been thinking about for a long time. Feel free to start a file of ideas, features and finishes you may like.
- Sketch up a floor plan for the space or in the case of new construction, a copy of the architectural plan. Your sketch should show location of windows, doors, existing plumbing and appliance location with dimensions.
- Come up with a budget you can live with. This number is important because a we can develop a very basic functional design for a tight budget or 'pull-out all the stops' with a more complex design for the same space.
Why should I use a design firm instead of any 'in-house' design offered by the kitchen showrooms in my area?
Kitchen showrooms are an excellent resource to become familiar with what is available for the modern kitchen. However, when a prospective client enters the showroom several things happen.
- You are greeted by whoever happens to be looking after the showroom that day
and become 'their' contact. The majority of kitchen companies pay the design staff on a commision basis so you've become a potential sale. This means that rather than spending the time required to get the design fine tuned to your needs, there may be an incentive to rush towards a contract and cabinet sale.
- In a few days time you'll be called to see their proposal, which will differ from
showroom to showroom making any real comparison impossible.
- As you have not entered into a contract with each firm, you'll likely not be able to
take copies of drawings to consider at leisure, so again your decision will be based on who you feel the most comfortable with instead of which proposal incorporates the best in features and finishes to meet your needs.
- By having a complete design before you ask for bids on the project you can feel
confident in comparing prices and features offered.
How do I know how many drawers and other convenience items should be included in the design?
- As we go through the design process together, you'll be asked lots of questions about how you live, cook,
entertain and shop. From this information we will guide you regarding what items and what quality of hardware should be used to fit the budget and your needs.
Should I buy appliances first?
- Generally no! Appliance choices can have a profound affect on the final layout and so at least a preliminary
layout should be done prior to purchasing these major items. We prefer you to have a 'short-list' of appliances you are considering which we can review with you.
How do I decide something major, like the cabinet colour?
- Like with many of life's decisions, the first one is the hardest! You can start with a piece of fabric, a painting,
even a piece of stone from which you can build an entire scheme. Your designer should work with you to ensure your choices fit with existing choices you've already made and that subsequent choices fit as well.
